Krav Maga is self-defense and physical training that was developed by the Israeli army in the 1940s. So Charles is a huge MMA fan and decided to sign us up for an intro training session at Valhalla Krav Maga. The owner DOn is the main trainer and for your intro training session only charges $20 each for the one-hour training. Valhalla is associated with Krav Maga Worldwide and the trainer is a certified trainer.
Krav Maga Training Session
When Charles and I went there were about 8 other people in the class as well. They do not beat around the bush, they throw you right into the deep end and you go from there. The sessions start with a 10-minute warm-up that will get you breathing pretty heavy right away. After the warm-up, you are then put into groups of 3 men and women mixed together. From there it is 50 minutes of elbows, kicks, punches, and holds.
You practice and do not hold back, it is one heck of a workout. It was quite a surprise how much you get to do just in the first class. If anyone has taken any type of karate or other classes, usually they ease you in doing the basics at best. That is not the philosophy of Valhalla, and that is what makes it worth it. In addition, the trainer is pretty hands-on and lets you know how to improve things such as your stance, punching, and kicking.
The question is would I recommend it, I would say yes. You learn quite a bit while getting a good work out. The only problem is the price drastically increases after the first session. But if you consider the price of a gym this is pretty comparable to that. Learn more about our misadventures on our weekly podcast!
